Today was Ui Ariki Day here in the Cook Islands, basically all the chiefs from all 15 islands come together in Rarotonga and have celebrations and meetings over the next week. We’ve been staying in the village that’s hosting today’s celebrations. One of the resort staff made us traditional leaf capes to wear and invited us down to where their chieftains welcome the other chiefs to this village. The ceremony then moved on to the grounds of one of the local churches for formalities and dancing. Fabulous photo ops all around.
At the end of today’s ceremonies we were invited to the feast, which equated to a basket of food each – chicken, pig, vegetables – that had been cooked in a hangi and will feed about 3 people for a week!!
We’re now finishing off our holiday with sunset cocktails at aroa beach, shipwreck bar, reminiscing about the wonderful time we’ve had over here during the past 4 weeks.
